Welcome to the Jon Hegan Academy

Thank you for visiting our website. The Jon Hegan academy in Upminster was the longest established International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) School in the UK. Opened in October 1997, many senior instructors within the IKMF and other federations have trained at the academy or privately under Jon Hegan. No other Krav Maga school in the UK can offer the same level of experience in reality based combat or the broad range of martial arts qualifications amongst its instructors.

Krav Maga, taught at the Jon Hegan Academy, is the most up to date, cutting-edge self-defence and hand-to-hand combat system available. It has gained international recognition from Police and military combat instructors as well experts in martial arts as an innovative, effective and highly practical self-defence and fighting method. Krav Maga techniques cover virtually any self defence situation including; fighting on the ground, against multiple attackers and people equipped with knives and firearms.

The Academy is also Royce Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu affiliate. We run classes on Wednesdays and a Saturday morning. We are fast becoming one of the most sought after places in Essex to learn authentic Gracie Jiu Jitsu, straight from the source. Principle instruction comes from Head Instructor GJJ 1st degree black belt Professor Jon Hegan, who received his black belt personally from UFC legend Royce Gracie in 2013 after completing the infamous Valente Brothers black belt test. The first ever person from the UK to have taken the test. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a highly developed grappling self defence art which emphasises the use of throws, joint locks and chokes.

The classes are open to anyone interested in self defence, as well as those who need these skills in their line of work. Jon has taught a wide range of UK based military and law enforcement personnel, as well as members of the Special Air Service – Special Boat Service – Federal Bureau of Investigations hostage rescue team (HRT) and SWAT team.
