Plain T-shirt, rash guard, sports shorts and leggings suitable for a beginner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class

Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class can be exciting, but it is completely normal to have a few questions beforehand. One of the most common is what you should wear.

The good news is that most academies understand beginners may not have specialist equipment. You do not need to buy expensive gear before attending your first class. In most cases, comfortable clothing is all you need to get started.

Do You Need a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi?

If your first class is a traditional Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu session, your academy may be able to lend you a gi for your trial class. If not, simply ask before you attend.

A BJJ gi is the traditional uniform worn during training and consists of:

  • A gi jacket
  • Gi trousers
  • A BJJ belt

As you continue training, investing in a properly fitted gi is worthwhile, but it is rarely necessary before your first lesson.

What If You Do Not Have a Gi?

Many beginners attend their first class wearing:

  • A plain T-shirt or rash guard
  • Sports shorts without zips or pockets
  • Leggings or athletic trousers if preferred

Avoid clothing with metal zips, large buttons, or anything that could catch during training.

Loose jewellery should also be removed before stepping onto the mats.

What About No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

If your academy offers No-Gi classes, clothing is slightly different.

Most students wear:

  • A rash guard or fitted sports top
  • Grappling shorts or plain athletic shorts
  • Compression leggings if preferred

The aim is to wear clothing that allows unrestricted movement while avoiding anything that could become caught during training.

Should You Wear Shoes?

No. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practised barefoot on the mats.

However, it is good etiquette to wear flip-flops or clean sandals when walking around the academy outside the training area. This helps keep the mats clean and hygienic.

Do You Need Protective Equipment?

For a beginner class, very little equipment is needed.

Some students choose to wear:

  • A gumshield
  • Groin protection (optional)
  • Athletic support if preferred

Most academies will explain what is recommended as you progress.

Personal Hygiene Matters

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a close-contact martial art, so good hygiene is an important part of training.

Before attending your first class:

  • Arrive in clean training clothes
  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed
  • Remove jewellery and watches
  • Tie back long hair
  • Avoid wearing strong fragrances

These simple steps help create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.

Don’t Worry About Looking Like a Beginner

Many people worry that everyone else will know exactly what they are doing. The reality is that every experienced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner once attended their very first class.

Instructors expect beginners to have questions and will explain everything from basic etiquette to simple movements before training begins.

The most important thing is arriving with a willingness to learn.
